About

Akili Mali is a research study co produced by community members, NGOs and researchers in Tanzania and the UK.

In Swahili there is a saying Akili ni Mali (Brain is Wealth). This is important, because the population of East Africa is ageing, and ageing is one of the biggest risk factors for dementia. We know the majority of people worldwide with dementia live in low and middle income countries, but that dementia can be delayed or prevented through brain health initiatives

Akili Mali will promote brain wealth in communities by developing and validating culturally-relevant measures of brain function, and measuring modifiable brain health factors that allow the community to take action.
